Simulation is becoming a more integral part of gynaecological surgical training, boosting competence and confidence, and providing a mechanism for assessment by senior surgeons. We recognise the impact that Covid19 has had on trainees in terms of gynaecology operating time. In line with the RCOG Covid19 recovery plan, we are increasing access to simulation across all units in the region.
All units are now equipped with an Inovus ‘Take Home’ LapAR trainer. Locations of these are:
The Inovus system has both single use and re-useable models to facilitate training. Funding has been approved for a batch of models for each unit, and additional models are available for purchase through the Inovus website. Please feel free to contact your unit representative if you have any questions about the system or specific requests for models. For troubleshooting with the Inovus system please see inovus.org/customer-support
The Inovus website also has an online skills platform, giving the ability to log activity, download procedure statistics, and request assessment OSATs, which can then be linked to your RCOG Eportfolio. To request an individual log in please contact Miss Jessica Preshaw [email protected]. Please include an e-mail which will follow you throughout training, rather than one specific to your current trust. The laparoscopic skills platform can be accessed via lapskills.com/.
Additional simulation equipment (listed below) can be found in the SiM SUiTE at Southmead Hospital. This space is open to all trainees:
The Learning and Research (L&R) building at Southmead also has an Inovus institutional LapAR system, which is open for use by any speciality. This is located in the Sim Space.
St Michaels Lap Training Sessions (for all Severn trainees)
We are offering laparoscopic simulation training at St Michaels hospital (Geoffrey Dixon room level D) every Monday 1pm - 4.30pm on the eosim lap trainers (eoSurgical - laparoscopic surgical simulator trainer and software). Each trainee will get their own log in so they can track their progress and send their videos for assessment. There is opportunity to complete OSATs. The sessions will be tailored to the trainee.
From January 2022 there will be 4 spaces available per week for trainees outside of St Michaels hospital. For further information and to book email Claire Newton (Consultant Gynae Oncologist) on [email protected]. Trainees based at St Michaels have access every week with no need to book via email.
